This sculptural installation art uses the everyday things that we take for granted like plastic cups, straws, buttons, toothpicks, Styrofoam, and Scotch tape. The artist, Tara Donovan; creative method start by choosing materials first. Based on the installation, it is clear that material selection is crucial in her step of work. To combine the pieces she usually used hot glue but mostly she relies on the structural of the material itself like stacking. Due to the site specific process of her installation, her installation needs to be reassembled from scratch for every exhibit.
Concept
The concept of this sculptural installation is the physical properties and capabilities of a mass material which when gathered create an intriguing visual. The materials are carefully organized and it mimics geological and biological forms like coral reef, or the breaking wave when it hits the shore from below the sea.
Description
The piece is basically hundreds of Styrofoam cups stuck together with hot glue suspended on the ceiling of a gallery. The lights of the room hitting each bundle of cups, radiant with a diffuse internal glow. The layers of the Styrofoam cups give beautiful shading gradient effects. It resembles puffy white clouds or iceberg hanging above your head. Tara Donovan installations often portray geological or biological forms.
